NorCal Truckers Unload Grievances on CARB Officials

According to an article in the Oroville Mercury-Register, truckers and growers had a chance last month to redress their grievances about California Air Resources Board regulations in front of some CARB representatives.

Several speakers at the event detailed how the regulations were forcing them out of business. One operator detailed how expensive diesel particulate-matter filter retrofits had cost him thousands and resulted in extensive downtime.

NICB: Staged Accidents Targeting Big Rigs?

accidentCriminals committing insurance fraud in Nevada are playing a dangerous game.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, nearly one quarter of suspected staged accidents in and around Las Vegas, Nevada, in the past 12-18 months have targeted commercial trucks.

Operators who suspect they may have been victims of such accents are encouraged to call (800) TEL-NICB (835-6422) and contact local authorities.

Clutch Adjustment

Nothing does more to extend the life of your clutch than maintaining proper adjustment.

A clutch out of adjustment can cause the clutch to slip, creating heat, which can break down the friction material.

An easy way to make sure your clutch doesn’t need an adjustment is to ensure you have “free-play.” Free-play is a small gap between the clutch release fork fingers and the throw-out bearing, and you can often feel this gap through the clutch pedal when it’s in its uppermost position.

Cleaire Shuts Down

Cleaire LogoSan Leandro based Cleaire Advanced Emissions Controls, which manufactures diesel particulate filters, shut down operations as of January 18th, 2013.

The move follows two brush fires, allegedly tied to their products as well as an August 2012 recall of their Longmile DPF.

One of these fires, which the Washington State Department of Natural Resources claims was caused by a DPF, burned more than 3000 acres and destroyed nearly 30 homes and more than 70 other structures.

The California Air Resources Board has offered an exemption of sorts for owners of Cleaire filters, saying “ affected owners and fleets will Cleaire filters, as noted in ARB records, will not be penalized for missing deadlines with applicable ARB regulations until this situation is resolved.”

Troubleshooting Trouble

manwithwrenchIt’s often difficult to pinpoint the source of a noise or vibration in a heavy-duty tractor. Many times, wrong parts get pulled out, only to find there’s nothing wrong with them.

Sometimes, folks will put the truck up on jack stands to try to pinpoint a troublesome noise. Often, this can cause more noise in the drivetrain, as these components are engineered to have a certain load on them from the mass of the truck itself.

Once the truck is jacked up, this load is removed and many parts of the drivetrain will start to make noise, when they are otherwise quiet when the truck is moving.

 

Not All that Glitters is a Sign of Trouble…

When checking transmission and rear end oil during routine maintenance, we’ll often find fine, glittery metal dust, smaller than grains of sand.

Some people see this and think it’s a sign of trouble — perhaps a worn or broken part  or  a bearing about to go out.

In our experience, this fine metal dust, if not occurring in large amounts, is not a sign of a problem, but rather a sign of ordinary wear.

Larger pieces likely are an indication that something inside the unit has broken or worn through the hardness, and this will require your attention.

Transmission Work and Speedometers

Many drivers expect a rebuilt transmission will mean that speedometer that hasn’t worked for months will finally get fixed.

Exchange transmissions normally don’t come with any speedometer parts, so the problem may
persist, even with another transmission.

We often find the speedometer drive gears (also called the exciter gear) and speedometer sensors in transmission exchange cores when they arrive in our shop.

Both the speedometer drive gear and sensor must be switched from the old transmission to the new, and because they are often reused, you speedometer might still be broken.
